West African Drumming Workshop with Amos Kwaku Gabia: Session 1

Join Amos Kwaku Gabia for a West African drumming professional development workshop. The event will take place at the BKCM Concert Hall.
Participants will learn and practice basic rhythmic technique on the djembe, kpalango and dun dun. The workshop will include drumming, storytelling, dance and song from Ghana.
Drums and small percussion will be provided, or you may bring your own. Please feel free to record on your devices!
*This workshop is the first session of a two-part series. Session II will take place in Spring 2023 (date TBA; more information to come.) Participants can register for either session, but we hope you will attend both.*
Description
Amos Kwaku Gabia is a professional musician from Ghana, West Africa. At an early age, he was introduced to music and started performing with the Noko Yedzen group. He plays a variety of instruments including the djembe, dun dun, kpanlogo, flute, and asalato.
Amos is a founding member of Saha, Ekome Feemo and performed with the award winning Salaka Ensemble. While still living in Ghana, he led programs for groups of travelers from around the world interested in learning about West African culture through its music and dance.
Amos recently spent some time back in his homeland working with students and educators while learning from the masters. This was a very special trip for him and he’s looking forward to sharing his experiences with you.

Neal Kirkwood’s 16-piece ensemble, featuring New York’s crème de la crème of jazz musicians, was formed in 2012. The ensemble’s repertoire centers around Kirkwood’s vast catalog of compositions, with forays into the music of Gil Evans, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Kirkwood’s compositions draw from Duke Ellington’s melodic, harmonically rich music. Other influences include Gil Evans, Igor Stravinsky, and Bela Bartok. Music critic Tim Page describes Kirkwood’s music as “simultaneously modernist and immediately appealing: lyrical, gracious and rhapsodic in character.”
The cost of admission is $20. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Connection Works, a leader in artist-run organizations, presents the critically acclaimed music series Wide Open Works, now in it’s 15th season. WORKS is the driving force behind the vibrant nonprofit organization Connection Works. This group has exploited its unique instrumentation of flute, piano and drums to forge a distinct and powerful musical voice, putting the “focus on the dynamic writing and deep simpatico of the trio itself” (The Village Voice). WORKS features Michel Gentile on flute, Daniel Kelly on piano, and Rob Garcia on drums.
Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission will cost $15.

Job stands up for his truth and dares to hold God to account. Loomis brings his unique compositional voice and signature soulful bass-playing to a new jazz song cycle form developed to bring this story alive. The fullness of the concert examines the most perplexing and powerful themes from the story: the ephemeral value of a virtuous life, the injustice of suffering, and the righteousness of rebellion.
