West African Drumming Workshop with Amos Kwaku Gabia: Session 1

Join Amos Kwaku Gabia for a West African drumming professional development workshop. The event will take place at the BKCM Concert Hall.

Participants will learn and practice basic rhythmic technique on the djembe, kpalango and dun dun. The workshop will include drumming, storytelling, dance and song from Ghana.

Drums and small percussion will be provided, or you may bring your own. Please feel free to record on your devices!

*This workshop is the first session of a two-part series. Session II will take place in Spring 2023 (date TBA; more information to come.) Participants can register for either session, but we hope you will attend both.*

Description

Amos Kwaku Gabia is a professional musician from Ghana, West Africa. At an early age, he was introduced to music and started performing with the Noko Yedzen group. He plays a variety of instruments including the djembe, dun dun, kpanlogo, flute, and asalato.

Amos is a founding member of Saha, Ekome Feemo and performed with the award winning Salaka Ensemble. While still living in Ghana, he led programs for groups of travelers from around the world interested in learning about West African culture through its music and dance.

Amos recently spent some time back in his homeland working with students and educators while learning from the masters. This was a very special trip for him and he’s looking forward to sharing his experiences with you.
