The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Suzuki Program is thrilled to be hosting a Guitar Teaching Strategies course led by Teacher Trainer Andrea Cannon.
Andrea is an alumna of Berklee College of Music with a Jazz Performance Major and an Outstanding Alumni Service award. Post-Collegiate studies include Applied Performance in Classical Guitar with Robert Guthrie of Southern Methodist University and Suzuki Pedagogy courses in Guitar and Early Childhood Education. Andrea’s Guitar Arts Studio in Houston, Texas includes Theory and Performance skills for guitarists and the first Suzuki Early Childhood Music program established in the US. She serves as Jazz Band consultant to Spring School District and directs Applied Guitar studies at Lone Star College. She is Certified through Music Teacher’s National Association and a Registered Teacher Trainer with Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Student recognition includes classical performance awards through MTNA, Eastfield College, University of Texas/Dallas, Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival, Houston Young Artist Concerts and Guitar Foundation of America Ensemble Showcase. Her jazz students have been selected to the Region Jazz Ensemble and showcased twice at Midwest Clinic. Andrea is humbled and proud that Arts Advocacy group Alarte of Guatemala has created a Scholarship in her name. The first recipient of the “Beca Andrea Cannon” is enjoying her new guitar and her Suzuki lessons; and she also has a beautiful smile.
What’s Teaching Strategies?
Teaching Strategies is a 10-hour course designed to guide teacher participants to become more effective teachers. It was first offered in Latin America in 1997 and has been implemented widely since then with favorable outcomes. Angelica Cortez, Executive Director of the SAA called it “What may be the most important course in the entire SAA curriculum.” For this reason, starting in January 2025, Teaching Strategies will be a prerequisite for Unit 3. Teachers who have already taken Unit 3 or higher are not required to take Strategies, although it is highly recommended to all Suzuki teachers.
Who can enroll:
Teaching Strategies is designed for teachers who have already registered Guitar Unit 2 or above and available to anyone who wishes to receive feedback on their teaching and has registered for at least Unit 1. Unit 1 prerequisites are ECC/Filosofia and an audition.
How it works:
Each participant will submit 2 recordings of 6-10 minutes each, or, if preferred, a teacher may teach one or both lesson segments in person. At least one of the recordings should be of an individual lesson. Class sessions are similar to a “pedagogy masterclass” where up to 10 participants watch their recordings together and receive positive comments and constructive feedback from the trainer.
Please contact nora.friedman@bkcm.org with questions.
You must attend all classes to receive credit with the SAA.
