Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth Celebration

Saturday, June 19, 2021 – 12:00PM — FREE!

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music presents A Music and Poetry Suite by Kevin Powell & the Soulfolk Experience at 12pm as part of the Friends of Brower Park’s free Juneteenth celebration at Brower Park (Brooklyn Ave & Prospect Pl in Crown Heights, 11am-5pm). Renowned poet, journalist, and civil and human rights activist Powell will perform an original poetry suite alongside music composed, arranged, conducted and performed by the Soulfolk Experience – featuring the talents of Maritri Garrett, V. Jeffrey Smith, David Pilgrim and Howard Alper. The piece will take the audience on an American journey through the lens of Juneteenth.

This program is part of a Crown Heights neighborhood collaboration between Friends of Brower Park and Brooklyn Children’s Museum in honor of Juneteenth – a day that commemorates the June 19, 1865 emancipation of all who had been enslaved in the United States (the last being those in Texas), nearly three years after President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Along with the music there will be instrument making and other activities from 11am-2pm. This event is in partnership with the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Friends of Brower Park. Brooklyn Children’s Museum will be open from 10am-1pm (pay as you wish) and 2pm-5pm (regular admission pricing).
