Meet the Harp!

Saturday, October 8, 2022 – 3 – 3:30pm, 4-4:45pm
We are excited to kick-off our beloved “Meet the…” series with the harp!
SESSION 1: 3-3:30pm (in the BKCM Garden)
Meet the Harp will be a fun and interactive program for all ages; this program is perfect for beginner music students.
The event will include a short performance, an interactive portion, a Q&A and an instrument petting zoo!
SESSION 2: 4-4:45pm (in the BKCM Concert Hall)
From 4 – 4:45pm, BKCM will host a Harp Open House. Students ages 7 and up can sign up for a free 5-minute harp lesson.
Tickets are FREE!
Capacity is limited, so RSVP while tickets last. An RSVP is valid for 1 child and up to 2 adults.
Want to meet even more instruments? From now through March, we’ll be holding sessions for woodwinds, flute and bass, voice and guitar. See below for upcoming dates. We’ll see you there!

Sun. January 15 – Meet the Flute/Bass, 2:40 – 3:10pm
Sat. February 25 – Meet the Voice, 3 – 3:30pm; 4 – 5pm – Voice Open House (free 5-minute lessons for students ages 8 and up)
Sun. March 5th – Meet the Guitar, 2:40 – 3:10pm
Sun. March 26 – Meet the Flute/Bass, 2:40 – 3:10pm

Job’s Trials: A Jazz Song Cycle by bassist/composer Dan Loomis is an evocative musical dive into an ancient, universal story exploring why bad things happen to good people. Job stands up for his truth and dares to hold God to account. Loomis brings his unique compositional voice and signature soulful bass-playing to a new jazz song cycle form developed to bring this story alive. The fullness of the concert examines the most perplexing and powerful themes from the story: the ephemeral value of a virtuous life, the injustice of suffering, and the righteousness of rebellion.
Tickets will be available for purchase online until Nov 19 at noon. The cost of admission is $15.

Josh Sinton’s Predicate Performs ‘4 freedoms’ for Creative Quartet

Josh Sinton’s “4 freedoms” is a meditation on and exploration of the models of democracy and compassionate anarchy manifested in the musics of Duke Ellington, Anthony Braxton, Andrew Hill, Julius Hemphill and Henry Threadgill. All of these African-American artists created personal and startling musical counterpoint and in doing so, imagined a world where everyone’s unique voice can be sounded together in a unique harmony. Sinton’s piece is an expression of his respect, admiration and love for the work of these great artists.
The performance will feature composer Josh Sinton on woodwinds, Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Christopher Hoffman on cello and Tom Rainey on drums.

Holiday Caroling

A beloved Brooklyn Conservatory tradition — holiday caroling! Please join us as we spread cheer throughout the neighborhood, culminating in a reception in our garden. Snacks and drinks will be available to purchase in the BKCM Garden as part of a fundraiser for the Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale. All ages, voices, faiths welcome.
To prepare, Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale Director Nick Nicassio will help lead the group in a warm-up from 2pm-2:30pm and then split up to wander and carol from 2:30pm-3:30pm. We will divide into separate groups for family music and for four-part madrigals, so there will be something to sing for everyone! The reception in the BKCM Garden will take place from 3:30 – 4:30pm.
