Saturday, August 6, 2022 – 8pm

Happy Birthday, Ms. Abbey! Join BKCM Jazz Leader Fellow Melvis Santa for an evening of music in the BKCM Concert Hall. The night will serve as a tribute to American jazz vocalist, songwriter and actress Abbey Lincoln and a kick-off concert for Santa’s fellowship cycle with BKCM.

About her inspiration for the concert, Santa shared, “My fascination with Ms. Abbey Lincoln started in my high school years in Havana, Cuba. Her particular timbre and the bold style she embodied reminded me of the powerful oral storytelling tradition I grew up with, and that has stayed with me since. Becoming myself a songwriter and an actress as well, I would often come back to listen to Abbey’s music in different times of my life.  She definitely is one of my great inspirations. As a Jazz Fellow Leader I want to dedicate this concert to Ms. Abbey who would be celebrating her 92nd birthday on this day.”

Santa will present a selection of original compositions, lyrics and arrangements she is currently working on. A versatile performer, Santa will sing, play piano and percussion, including the bata drums. Santa will be joined by special guests, Vinicius Gomes on guitar and Josh Evans on trumpet.

Tickets can be purchased before the concert at the concert’s Eventbrite for $12 or for $10 at the door using Venmo/Paypal.
