“The Angel at Philadelphia: William Still” is a musical interpretation of the 2021 book entitled “William Still” by William C. Kashatus. Known as the “Father of the Underground Railroad,” William Still was a free Black abolitionist who helped hundreds of enslaved people escape from slavery. The evening will feature new music written by CMS faculty member Lafayette Harris, Jr. and feature a six-piece ensemble including a vocalist.

Known as a “go-to” pianist by many musicians and bandleaders, Lafayette Harris, Jr. currently performs and records with Houston Person, Archie Shepp and with his own bands. He’s toured with late great music pioneer Max Roach, performed with the Duke Ellington Legacy Orchestra, and has recorded and toured with late four-time Grammy nominee Ms. Ernestine Anderson.
