About the Artists

Visual artist Julia Elsas is part of the inaugural cohort of the New Jewish Culture Fellowship of Brooklyn Jews, sponsored by UJA-Federation of NY. Julia has reimagined the mysterious biblical instrument, the Ugav, through a series of ceramic sculptures. Julia’s sonic sculptures and other handmade instruments will be performed by Kenny Wollesen, Sae Hashimoto, Cyro Baptista, Dalius Naujo, Mike Irwin and Rich Stein.

Julia was born in Birmingham, Alabama and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her current work encompasses printmaking, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, papermaking, installation and performance. She owns RE/PRESS Editions, offering her lines of handmade jewelry, functional ceramic goods and contemporary Judaica. Past exhibitions and performances include: The Drawing Center, Ortega y Gasset Projects, Pratt Art Institute, Nars Foundation, International Print Center, Textile Arts Center and the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Kenny Wollesen is a drummer, vibraphonist, percussionist and instrument builder based in New York City. He is the founder of the Wollesonic Laboratories. Wollesen has recorded and toured with John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Tom Waits and Steven Bernstein, among others.

Juilliard trained, Sae Hashimoto is an exhilarating and unique percussionist based in NYC.  She has the rare ability to cross multiple musical genres. She plays timpani in the New York Philharmonic, and she plays vibraphone for John Zorn’s adventurous avant-garde compositions.

Brazilian performer, composer and bandleader Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the premier percussionists on the planet, bringing his unique charm and undeniable rhythmic drive to countless stages, performing on numerous Grammy Award-winning recordings, and collaborating with myriad luminaries such as Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, Yo-Yo Ma, Caetano Veloso and many others.

“Dalius Naujo is a genius percussionist who has lately moved into conducting and composing. He is not normal! He is totally possessed by his art, nothing else matters to him! The muses of music have made him lose his mind, he is moving ahead unpredictably and dangerously, as all poets do.” – Jonas Mekas

Trumpeter and composer Michael Irwin grew up in New York City. Inspired by the sounds he heard throughout his youth, he studied Jazz at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase where he was the student of trumpet legend Jon Faddis. A presence on the vibrant New York Jazz and new music scene, he has played in ensembles led by Kenny Wollesen, Federico Ughi, Joel Forrester and others.

Percussionist Rich Stein has studied and performed music all around the world. Rich has worked with: Lila Downs, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Zakir Hussain, Richard Stoltzman, Khaira Arby and Sway Machinery, Slavic Soul Party, The Epichorus and many more. Rich, in partnership with ceramicist Walter Heath, has designed an original modular percussion instrument called the Hydra, which can create a wide array of sounds and accommodate many styles of drumming techniques.
