If you’ve never had formal training or would like to start singing again, this course will help students build confidence and discover vocal technique in a fun, supportive and nurturing setting. Taught by an expert vocal coach who is active in the pop, jazz and rock world, this class will expand both singing and speaking voices through connection of mind, body and emotion.

 
Ensembles

BKCM offers a wide range of ensembles for students of all ages, levels and experience. Students are motivated to practice repertoire outside of class and encouraged by their peers to take on new challenges. Taught by experts in the field, our ensembles include performance opportunities and a chance to connect with a community of other instrumentalists who are interested in developing their artistry.

Your Teacher

Joy Askew

Joy Askew arrived in New York City from the North of England in the early 1980s and made a splash on the music scene playing with many artists including Joe Jackson, Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Rodney Crowell and New York’s own Willie Nile. She also appeared in renowned Performance Artist Laurie Anderson’s concert film “Home of The Brave” In the late 90’s her first solo album “Tender City” was released and since then she has released 7 more.

Askew has opened live for David Byrne, John Prine and David Bowie among others, played and sung on albums by James Maddock and Sufjan Stevens and more, collaborated with The Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band in England, has songs published by Quincy Jones and others. Currently Joy is working on songs for a new album with a new band and continues to conduct The Sirens of Brooklyn, an Indy girl choir that has performed every December for the last 11 years. She has been teaching vocal studies at Stevens Institute of Technology in the Music Tech Program for the last 8 years.

Askew lives between Brooklyn and Southwest France.
