BKCM’s Suzuki program offers two String Ensembles which are open by audition to any students who play violin, viola, cello or bass. Led by Suzuki and Community Music School (CMS) instructors, the two ensembles are a wonderful combination of Suzuki, CMS and non-BKCM string students.

Praeludium Strings, the entry-level ensemble for students approximately ages 8-12, is open to musicians playing in late Suzuki book 1 or higher and are able to sight read at a basic level.

Chamber Strings is comprised of intermediate to advanced students, approximately ages 10-15, typically with previous ensemble experience.

The ensembles rehearse for one hour on Sundays from September through June and perform a concert during the fall and spring semesters.

Students outside of the Suzuki program are welcome to audition for the String Ensembles for the 2022-2023 school year. Students enrolled in BKCM’s Music Partners program and BKCM Suzuki and CMS private lesson students receive 50% off tuition for the Praeludium and Chamber String Ensembles.

For more information about the Suzuki String Ensembles, please email ruth.klukoff@bkcm.org.

Financial aid is available for qualifying students. To apply please contact kris.mandapat@bkcm.org and fill out the financial aid application.

CMS String Ensemble is offered through BKCM’s Community Music School (CMS) to students ages 8-14 with one to two years of private lessons on their instruments. The CMS String Ensemble meets on Saturdays for one hour. Click here to learn more.

Suzuki Program

The Suzuki method is recognized worldwide as a highly effective approach for teaching children the language of music. Generations of students have begun a lifelong journey of musical enrichment through this immersive and supportive pedagogy.

The world-class Suzuki Program at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music offers instruction in bass, cello, flute, guitar, piano, viola and violin and incorporates three essential elements of an instrumental music education: private lessons, theory classes and group classes. Parent involvement is an integral component of the Suzuki approach, especially in the first semester when parents learn alongside their children. During their musical journey, parents practice daily with their children, provide encouragement and work in partnership with their teachers.

Suzuki is an annual program that requires a full-year commitment. The beginner intake process starts in January for enrollment in fall the same year and includes a required parent orientation, an observation and an intake interview.
