In this weekly small group ensemble, adult musicians with intermediate to advanced skills on their instrument, have the opportunity to collaborate, improvise, rehearse and develop confidence in their jazz playing. Coached by professional jazz musicians, students work with classic jazz repertoire, highlighting blues forms and standards from the Great American Songbook while digging deep into the world of improvisation. Taught by experts in the jazz world, our faculty perform alongside the students in a mentorship model experience. Students perform a minimum of once per semester, with additional performance opportunities throughout the year.

Placement Auditions
Because this ensemble is limited in size and instrumentation, students who want to join the Jazz Instrumental Lab must follow the following steps:

  1. Send an email to the Community Music School administrative team at cmsadmin@bkcm.org.
  2. Please indicate what instrument you play, your level and what sections of the class you are available for (Mondays or Tuesday evenings).
  3. If you have already been a member of the program, please indicate which ensemble and semester you most recently joined.
