In Music Therapy, the developmental, emotional, psychological and social needs of children and adults are addressed through active music-making in a relationship with a music therapist. The Conservatory offers the services of master’s degree level, certified music therapists with New York State creative arts licenses. These professionals are trained multi-instrumentalists with specialties that include psychology, special education and other related fields.

An initial intake session is scheduled to assess the strengths and needs of each client and to determine placement. Sessions are scheduled on an individual basis to best meet the needs of clients and families. Limited financial assistance is available.

Social Sound Bytes

For students enrolled in individual adaptive lessons, our remote Social Sound Bytes classes provide an opportunity to practice musical skills in a group context. Groups are led by music educators with degrees in music therapy and focus on enhancing the musical skills and experiences gained through our regular program. Social Sound Bytes classes are open to all students currently enrolled in individual adaptive lessons.

COVID-19 Update

For the month of September, BKCM will operate on an entirely remote basis. The music therapy program will make our reopening decisions based on best safety and clinical practices for our students and families, which may mean a more conservative approach to going back to in person sessions. We have built a rich and sustainable virtual music therapy package for short and long term decision making. Please stay tuned for updates as we proceed through the school year. BKCM’s COVID-19 task force has been working diligently to develop building reopening plans.
