Prerequisites:

  • Ability to record on any device.
  • Must have some experience singing or playing an instrument (Piano, Ukulele or Guitar preferred)

What songs do you love? You are a creative and inspired person… but how do you capture your emotions and feelings into a song or rap? One fleeting idea can spark a whole song. Develop a writing process in a creative and safe environment. You will learn the tools to develop a songwriting process. Collaborate with a community of other songwriters through song shares and feedback from your peers.

Come join Joy Askew, whose songs have captured the attention of Quincy Jones and has performed and worked with Peter Gabriel and Sufjan Stevens.

SYLLABUS

WEEK 1 – SONG STRUCTURES
Explore the structure of songs through examples and analyzing.
What makes the structure of a song impactful?

WEEK 2 – LYRICS
What are the tools such as title, rhymes, phrases or rhythm?
How can you say it another way?

WEEK 3 – FLASH FICTION
How can creative writing inspire your titles and lyrics?
Build your library of lyrics and titles.

WEEK 4 – THE MELODY, RHYTHM, CHORDS
What makes a good melody?
How does rhythm inspire mood and energy?
Descending lines, ascending sequences, Intervals, lines & leaps.
Songs from rhythm & beats

WEEK 5 – THE CHORUS
What Makes A Good Chorus?
Listen to and analyze examples of choruses.

WEEK 6 – LYRICS 2 (THE SENSES)
Deeper look into how to tap the senses in your lyrics.

WEEK 7 – SONG STRUCTURES 2
Deeper look into song structure including refrains, repetition, and endings.

WEEK 8 -YOUR VOICE
How often is a song successful because of the sound of the voice singing it?
Where is the ‘Arc’ of your voice?
Do you write songs in the best place for your voice?
How can you create tension or atmosphere in your song?

WEEKS 9 to 10 – REVIEW AND SONG SHARE
