Sharpen your instrumental skills this summer!
This camp is recommended for strings, guitar and piano students who have been taking private lessons for at least one year. Each morning includes workshops, semi-private lessons and small ensembles and chamber groups. In the afternoons, students choose from a wide range of fun electives, such as Bluegrass, Composition, Global Beats and Groove Lab. Students who attend more than one week may have the opportunity to try a different elective each week taught by an expert guest teacher.
Sample Schedule:
9:00am – 9:45am – Musicianship Workshop
10:00am – 11:00am – Semi-Private Lessons
11:15am – 12:00pm – Ensembles and Chamber Groups
12:00pm – 12:30pm – Lunch Break
12:45pm – 3:00pm – Afternoon Electives
*Bluegrass Summer Jam (Guitar and Strings)
*Composition Club (Write an original piece for your ensemble!)
*Global Beats
*Groove Lab (Electronic Beat Making)
Electives (Subject to change)
Bluegrass: Taught by expert bluegrass musicians in a fun, supportive, jam-style approach, students experience the joys of leading, improvising and accompanying traditional folk songs and old-time music.
Composition: For the aspiring composer or songwriter, each students’ composition will be performed live by a professional ensemble at the end of the camp. Students learn online notation software so they can continue to compose all summer long. No prior experience in composition is necessary, however we recommend that students have one to two years experience in private lessons.
Global Beats: Students will learn the basics of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, South American and African drumming traditions through call and response, language, repetition and layers. They will connect with the rich history and culture of various musical drumming traditions and learn basic hand drumming and percussion techniques.
Groove Lab: An interactive deep dive into the study of beats, rhythms and grooves from different cultures around the world. Students will have the opportunity to create, collaborate and experiment with rhythm production using tablets, drum machines, beat-making, drums and body percussion.
