Joy M. Newton

Director of Programs & House Party Curriculum Designer

Joy Marilie Newton is a native New Yorker with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music (band emphasis) and a Master’s Degree in Early Education from Teacher U- Hunter College, where she focused on curriculum writing, designing assessments and rubrics, and data analysis. She has been a teaching artist and full time music educator in NYC pre-schools and elementary schools since 2001. She has taught band, private lessons, mommy and me classes, written curriculum as well as taught classroom general music to budding musicians ages two through adulthood.

Seeing a void in children’s music intended for performance, that directly appealed to or reflected communities of color where she worked, Joy began to write and produce music for her students to perform in 2010. Creating music for performances, classroom activities, units of study and an overall curriculum that directly appeals to and is effective with the population she taught become her niche. She independently released an album called “Journey” for families in January of 2013.

Most recently, Joy was the director of the arts department, instructional coach and music teacher at Leadership Prep Bedford Stuyvesant.
