Peter Brainin

Born in the Bronx, saxophonist Peter Brainin has distinguished himself over the past 25 years as a member of many important bands,and also as a composer and leader of his own adventurous projects. As a member of pianist Joey Calderazzo’s quartet in the late 1980’s, he worked alongside Jeff”Tain”Watts, Ron McClure and Billy Hart. His work as a sideman also includes 10 years (1989 – 1999) with legendary pianist Hilton Ruiz. In the early 90’s he toured Europe with Mongo Santamaria and in ’95 joined the Chico O’farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra. Peter has recorded on 2 of Chico’s Grammy nominated CDs and appeared in the films, “Calle 54″and “Thomas Crown Affair”, as well as performing on major festival and concert tours in Europe, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and Cuba. He is currently a featured member of Arturo O’Farrill’s grammy winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and for 2008 – 2010 was program director for their Afro Latin Jazz Alliance Academy of Music. Some other bands and artists Peter has performed and/or recorded with include: Paquito D’Rivera, Bebo Valdez All Star Latin Jazz Big Band, Randy Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Randy Weston, Willie Colon and Legal Alien, Edy Martinez, Mambo Legends Orchestra, One for All, Papo Vazquez’ Pirates and Troubadors, Marlon Simon and Nagual Spirits, Benny Golson, the Danny Moore Quintet, Michel Camilo, Harold Mabern, Ruben Blades, Uri Caine, Donald Harrison, Giovanni Hidalgo, Ray Barretto and Eddie Henderson. He was twice awarded the BRIO fellowship for Music Composition by the Bronx Council on the Arts. Many of Peter’s compositions appear on original CDs with co-leader Steve Johns, including “Ceremony”(Cats Paw) and “No Saints, No Sinners”(Playscape).
