Liz is a community volunteer with a professional background in community affairs, membership development and government. While raising her three children, she has been an active volunteer in her children’s schools and with various organizations throughout Brooklyn and NYC, with her work focusing primarily on community building, development and events. She served on the Board of Trustees of Brooklyn Free Space preschool from 2021-2024 and is a founding member and officer of the Brooklyn chapter of P.E.O., a nonprofit social organization that provides scholarships and grants to women in higher education. In addition, she has volunteered with fundraising and outreach for several political campaigns on the national and state levels. She is a strong advocate for neuroinclusive education and programming.
Liz earned a BA in Political Science from Colorado State University and an MA in International Affairs from American University’s School of International Service. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, she has lived in Park Slope with her husband Tim and their three children since 2003. She has been taking piano lessons at BKCM for over two years (after a multi-decade hiatus) and enjoys seeing lots of live music and theater in NYC.
“I’ve long believed in the transformative, healing power of music,” Liz says. “Music can often express emotions that words cannot articulate. I came to BKCM as an adult piano student several years ago after having taken lessons throughout childhood. It’s been a wonderful, humbling and sometimes challenging experience for me and serves as a reminder of the huge impact that inclusive music education and exposure can have on people of all ages and abilities. As a new Board member, I am very excited to have the opportunity to support BKCM’s mission to help more people across NYC have access to affordable music education and therapies.”
