Our Leadership
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In these extraordinarily challenging times, BKCM is redoubling our commitment to our work, vision and values—on behalf of our expanding community and all New Yorkers.
Over the past 128 years we’ve grown from a fledgling collection of 200 students and instructors, many of them new immigrants, into a thriving cultural hub for thousands of musicians, aspiring musicians and music lovers representing the full tapestry of New York City.
In 2024 we served more than 7,000 students and music therapy clients from every borough, age group and income bracket. Our Park Slope headquarters was a home away from home for Community Music School and Suzuki students, and Music Therapy clients, from over 100 zip codes. During off-peak hours our building transformed into a lifeline and gathering place for working musicians, with membership in our affordable studio rental program, the Studio Collective, rising 64% since 2023 to some 2,000 artists.
Citywide, our offsite Music Partners and Music Therapy programs operate in an all-time high of 83 locations (including the BKCM Community Music Center in Cypress Hills-East New York). And the BKCM of today is a premier presenting institution, drawing some 15,000 New Yorkers to 200-plus high-quality, low-cost (or free) festivals, concerts and events every year.
I am incredibly proud of our achievements in 2024 and deeply grateful for your unwavering support. Your generosity allows BKCM to be the beacon of stability, belonging, connectedness and community-building that it was for its immigrant founders in 1897 — and that New Yorkers urgently need today.
In the year ahead, we are holding even more events that celebrate cultural diversity (like our Holi, Lunar New Year and Juneteenth celebrations) and uplift underrepresented artists (like the BCCO’s American premiere of works by the British composer Ruth Gipps). We’re answering the call for healing and calm (check out our immersive sound baths) and filling the need for community and connection (with concerts and parties across a broader array of parks, sidewalks and stoops).
New Yorkers also want more of BKCM. As demand for onsite and offsite programming rises, we’ve been working behind the scenes to expand our capacity and accommodate both immediate and long-term growth. I’m pleased to report that we have made great progress on this front. We’ll soon be in a position to share the details of our plan and invite you to be part of BKCM’s future growth, and I can’t wait to embark on this new chapter together.
Chad Cooper
Executive Director
LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
As the videos in our 2024 Annual Report illustrate, BKCM’s ever-growing reach across New York City is grounded in individual attention and care. It’s this spirit that guides every connection with students, music therapy clients, families and our broader community.
I first fell in love with BKCM’s community as a parent – my son Elliot took lessons through the Community Music School and my daughter Lena was a music therapy student. I was a Suzuki piano and violin student as a child, and I had experienced first-hand how music can be a transformative force in a young person’s life. It didn’t take long to see how uniquely supportive the environment was at the Conservatory, and soon enough, I re-started piano lessons myself.
It didn’t take long to appreciate everything that happens in our Park Slope home, from the life-changing work that our music therapists do onsite with clients of all ages to the world-class music education students receive in our Suzuki and CMS programs. But the more involved I became in the community, the more I learned about the work we do outside our building at the more than 80 partner sites across the five boroughs. The scope of this often unassuming organization is truly impressive: We are among the largest providers of music therapy and in New York City, and we have the largest off-site music education program of any community music school in the city.
In a moment when the value of supporting arts education and evidence-based clinical practices is being called into question at the highest levels of government, I have never been more certain that the work BKCM does matters for New Yorkers, or prouder to be part of an organization with steadfast values. In the years ahead, we must continue to celebrate, support and grow this work so that more New Yorkers can access the power of music education and music therapy.
I hope that this Annual Report will provide some insight into the scope and depth of our work in 2024, and I congratulate BKCM’s leadership, faculty, staff, Board of Trustees and Advisory Council for all they’ve accomplished.

In 2024, BKCM’s longest-running program – the Community Music School in Park Slope – continued to expand its faculty to meet ever-growing demand for private lessons, group classes, community ensembles and summer camps. Nearly 1,200 people between the ages of 1 and 82 studied with the world-class musicians who comprise our CMS faculty during the 2023-24 school year, and the number of CMS students receiving financial aid increased by nearly 70% from 2023. Throughout the year, CMS hosted dozens of recitals and its beloved annual Performathon, providing students of all levels with the chance to gain valuable performance chops while building a musical community.

Inspired by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s belief that children can master music like a native language, BKCM’s world-class Suzuki program continued to grow in 2024, welcoming 24 new families and providing financial aid to a record 34 students. We also expanded our Suzuki Early Childhood Education offerings to include a new class for pre-K and kindergarten students called Suzuki Bridges. Our remarkable students performed in the New York Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, placed highly in the New York Global Music Competition, and performed at Merkin Hall as part of a national search by Interlochen Presents. Through it all, our gifted students truly embodied Dr. Suzuki’s maxim, “Beautiful tone, beautiful heart.”

NEW LOCATIONS IN FY24
2024 was a year of exciting growth for BKCM’s Music Therapy program, capped by a transformative $250,000 gift from Billy and Alexis Joel’s namesake foundation. At our building in Park Slope, our licensed music therapists provided group and private sessions to 122 families from 50 zip codes. And our music therapy outreach program – already among NYC’s largest providers of music therapy in schools, afterschool programs, developmental preschools, youth centers, shelters and nursing homes – launched two new partnerships, including our first music therapy program in the Bronx. All told, we reached nearly 2,000 clients across all five boroughs.

Faced with severe arts education cutbacks in NYC’s schools and community-based organizations, our Music Partners program redoubled its efforts to expand access to high-quality music education for all New Yorkers. In 2024, we launched six new partnerships, connecting more public school students from across the city with high-quality music education. In total, our programs reached more than 3,800 musicians with weekly, intensive music education across 35 schools, youth centers and senior centers at little or no cost.
“Music is one of the greatest tools for building relationships, meaning and creativity. That’s what I think about all the time with our programs.”

NYC SCHOOLS REPRESENTED AMONG CMC STUDENTS
Housed within the Chestnut Commons Community Center in Cypress Hills/East New York, the Community Music Center (CMC) has quickly grown into BKCM’s largest onsite music education program outside of Park Slope. Through this partnership with Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, local families can access top-quality private lessons, classes and a band program at little or no cost. In FY24, CMC students represented a cohort of 44 schools, including eight schools in the neighborhood where BKCM’s Music Partners program offers music programming. After launching with Saturday classes and the Chestnut Band Academy, programming has expanded to include a Summer Band Camp, and individualized middle and high school admission counseling (thanks to a new partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts).

BKCM’s Studio Collective addresses a key challenge for emerging and professional musicians in New York City: finding affordable, high-quality rehearsal space. During the 2024 fiscal year, our studio rentals program grew by 64% to nearly 2,000 members. We teamed up with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment to provide 4,100 hours of free rehearsal time to NYC musicians during New York Music Month in June. Thanks to a yearlong sponsorship from Tito’s Handmade Vodka that has enabled us to lower our rental rates to as low as $10/hour, the Studio Collective’s role as a key resource for musicians in the city is poised to grow even further in FY25. We also launched quarterly Song Shares, where all Studio Collective members are invited to perform new material and make new musical connections.
“I love the environment at the Conservatory. I’m here a lot more than I planned, so it’s definitely been beneficial for me.”
–REYKWAAN ADORNO, STUDIO COLLECTIVE MEMBER

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Ensuring that BKCM is a welcoming, inclusive and comfortable place for all people to work, study and make music will always be at the heart of our mission. In 2024, our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee completed its third DEI Survey. This was our most extensive survey to date, capturing demographic information of our onsite students and clients as well as those at our 80+ offsite programs for the first time. As a result, this survey provided us with our first complete snapshot of BKCM’s student/client population citywide. To learn more about the many communities and neighborhoods that take part in our programs, scroll through the results to your right, or click the button below to read the report in full.
