More Than Music: Inside Music Therapy

Description

Saturday, March 21 • 5-7 PM • The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about BKCM’s new Music Therapy Institute.  But you may be wondering: what exactly is Music Therapy? What does this clinical discipline look like in practice for therapists, clients and families today? What are BKCM’s music therapists doing across the city today, and what’s our plan to deepen that work tomorrow?

If you’re looking for answers, come start your Saturday evening with BKCM’s music therapy team on March 21! Through interactive, multisensory demonstrations and musical activities, our music therapists will offer an inside look at what music therapy looks like in practice.

The evening’s program includes introductory remarks and preview of BKCM’s Music Therapy Institute with program director Toby Williams, MA, LCAT, MT-BC, followed byactivities all over the building, including…

  • Music as Language Instrument Jam: Come explore how sound and improvisation can help us build a shared language. No musical experience required!
  • Music Therapy & Memory Care: Hear from BKCM music therapists about their work using music therapy to support emotional and cognitive well-being for people living with dementia.
  • Sensory Room: Learn more about the role of light, sound and vibration in music therapy
  • The Power of Familiar Song: Experience the way music therapists use familiar sounds and songs to allow space for engagement and communication.
  • Clinical Session Videos: See our therapists and clients working, singing and creating together, both at BKCM and in NYC schools and community centers.
  • DaFunkies Performance: A headline performance by everyone’s favorite teen rock band!

Of course, we’ll also have food, drinks, and a few more surprises up our sleeves!
