Description
Sunday, April 26 • 7:30 PM • BKCM Concert Hall
This new workshop series hosted by the BKCM Jazz Program explores the rich past, present and future of Indian classical music. Our third event features a special performance and workshop with Quadrature, exploring their contemporary fusion of Indian ragas with rock, jazz and psychedelia.
From Bollywood to Hollywood — where the tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, took home three Grammys last year alone — the ancient forms, rhythms and patterns at the root of Indian classical music continue to find vibrant new expressions all over the world, including here in New York, where artists like Quadrature, Brooklyn Raga Massive, Nexus, and ARAJ are fusing traditional forms with contemporary genres to create innovative musical horizons all their own.
Whether you are a longtime lover of Indian classical music seeking a new community to share it with, a student looking to deepen your musical palette, or someone curious to dive into India’s rich musical history and forms for the first time, we invite you to join us for a series of musical workshops led by some of NYC’s most innovative masters of the craft.
Workshop # 3: New Sonic Frontiers with Quadrature
The Ragas & Rhythms series continues on Sunday, April 26 at 7 pm with a performance and workshop by Quadrature, an NYC-based musical powerhouse that redefines sonic frontiers with their electric blend of raga, rock, jazz and psychedelia.
Rooted in deep musical traditions, yet soaring into uncharted territories, the band crafts soundscapes that defy laws of genre, space and time. They feature the magnetic sitar/effects of Neel Murgai, the experimental Firebird trumpet/effects of Indofunk Satish, the structural rhythm of Tripp Dudley on drum set, and the electric grooves of Damon Banks on bass.
Emerging from the legendary Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM) jam sessions, Quadrature began their journey with fully improvised sets rooted in ragas, captivating audiences on the streets of Brooklyn. In 2023, they were artists in residence at David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center at The Pocantico Center, where they further developed their sound and arrangements. They have performed at Globalfest at Lincoln Center, Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works, Barclays Center Plaza, Joe’s Pub and more. Inspired by their name, which derives from mathematics and astronomy, Quadrature is the area under the curve of raga and contemporary music, working the right angles while embracing odd time signatures and black hole blues. Live, Quadrature is a revelation as their dynamic sets travel from contemplative solos to thunderous ragarock anthems.
