Naomi Nakanishi is a genre-bending pianist and composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Their practice is rooted in creative bravery, informed by sounds inspired by experimental jazz, contemporary classical, and indie-folk music, a reflection of their love for improvisation.  As a bandleader and sought-after collaborator, Naomi has performed at esteemed venues including Roulette Intermedium, The Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club, Birdland Jazz Club, and the Academy Museum. Their works have been recognized by Chamber Music of America, United States Artists, and the Academy Museum.  Naomi regularly performs with their piano trio Whimsy, jazz quartet Ikioi, and experimental trio Three Thread, which features tap dance, synthesizer, and tenor saxophone.  Naomi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Eastman School of Music and Master’s from Berklee College of Music. 

Naomi’s teaching philosophy emphasizes creative autonomy through tailored curriculums grounded in fundamentals, attainable goals, and playful practice, allowing students to develop a personal connection to the music in a safe, artistic environment.  They seek to continue learning from intergenerational, diverse coalitions that challenge tradition and nurture exploration.
