Matthew Honor is a percussionist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and raised near the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, Matthew studied classical percussion during his formative years. While searching for greater self expression on his instrument Matt shifted his focus to the drum set, leading to a lifelong study of jazz and improvised music. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Manhattan School of Music, since moving to New York City in 2013 Matthew quickly gained a reputation as one of the most indispensable drummers in the creative music scene. He has performed in venues across the United States, Europe, and Asia, with artists such as the Kevin Sun, Cat Toren, Ethan Helm, Juanma Trujillo, Andrew Schiller, and many others. As a teaching artist, Matthew prioritizes developing strong foundational skills among the different instruments in the percussion family. Musicality, reading skills, versatility, exploring many different kinds of music, and most importantly: fun and play – these are the core tenets of Matthew’s teaching philosophy.
