The New York Times describes Sara Schoenbeck’s bassoon playing as “galvanizing” and “riveting, mixing textural experiments with a big, confident sound”. She has played with everyone from David Byrne to the legendary experimental composer Anthony Braxton, and her bassoon graces the soundtracks of two Matrix movies. Somehow, amid all of this success, Sara finds time to serve as BKCM’s Music Partners Program Coordinator.
Sara is also an active private bassoon teacher serving as faculty at BKCM, Brooklyn College and her own private studio. This multifaceted path allows her to follow a creative life in music. “I still perform and tour, but because of my work as a teacher and administrator I’m able to follow the opportunities that are exciting to me and feel really aligned to my musical voice,” she says.
“I’ve always liked the balance between playing, teaching and arts administration,” Sara says. “This triumvirate makes me feel complete. I have deep and lasting relationships with my students, and I really believe in the Music Partners program. All students should have access to music in schools, and it’s inspiring to be a part of a team that makes this happen.”
