What is C.A.S?
This class is open to BKCM Suzuki students on violin, viola, flute, guitar, piano, bass, and cello with two or more years in our program. Perfect for students who are enjoying learning music theory and would like to take it one step further, C.A.S. makes the extraordinary connection between “theoretical” theory and the creativity of composing original works.
Composition students are expected to complete weekly assignments so that they can prepare original pieces for performances at the end of each semester. The first semester concert is in mid to late January; the second semester concert is in mid-May at BKCM’s annual Open Stages event.
Taught by Ty Citerman, the Suzuki Program’s Theory Coordinator (and an experienced composer and ensemble leader), this class will help students expand their relationships with their own instruments by writing solo works. They will also learn about instruments they do not play through collaboration with classmates and other activities that lay the groundwork for creating more ambitious ensemble pieces.
Students in 4th grade or lower must have a parent attend the class in order to take notes and help track assignments.

SPRING 2026 SCHEDULE: 1/10/27 – 4/4/27 (10 weeks)
How to Apply
Returning families please make note: the format of C.A.S. is changing! Now a ten-class intensive, students gather in semi-private classes limited to 2-3 students at the same or similar levels of experience. Classes are offered in Fall and Spring, though students are encouraged to register for the whole year.

A limited amount of financial aid is available for qualified students during the 2026-27 school year. Your family may qualify for financial aid. Students enrolled in group classes and ensembles have up to 24 hours after their first class to be eligible for withdrawal and receive a refund for the remaining classes or request a transfer (subject to availability in other sections). Registration and payment plan fees are nonrefundable.
