Filling out the application below is required for all applicants. Unlike most chamber music programs, which are selective in who they admit, we offer everyone a chance to be in a group as long as scheduling allows for a good match.
All Youth Chamber Music Program students are asked to submit a short video audition (recommended) and schedule a non-competitive live audition so that they can be placed in an appropriate ensemble, paired by instrument type, proficiency level and musical interests. While we pay great attention to creating the best possible groups, there may be differences in levels of experience. Our expert coaches guide each group to rise to the highest level of music making and choose repertoire that supports the diverse needs and abilities of the ensemble.

While chamber music at BKCM aims to provide an excellent musical experience for students across a wide range of levels, the interdependent nature of small‑ensemble playing—and the fact that each member relies on the others for a successful performance—means the program is best suited for students who have been studying their instrument for several years and have reached certain benchmarks. Students do not need any prior chamber music experience. If you have a student who you think would be a good fit for the chamber program, below is guidance on the skills and levels they should have in order to thrive.
The music audition process is non‑competitive. Its purpose is simply to confirm that students have demonstrated the proficiency required to succeed in the program. We welcome every qualified candidate.
The process begins with a pre‑recorded submission of any piece that best represents the student’s current level. After reviewing submissions, students are invited to a live audition for placement. In this audition, each student will be asked to demonstrate the following:
- A scale in the key of their choosing, two octaves
- A sight‑reading diagnostic
- A flash‑learning piece — a short excerpt provided one week before the audition
- Two minutes of a solo piece of the student’s choosing
- Learning & Practice — Students should be able to learn music on a reasonable deadline and should already have a habit of daily practice.
- Reading — Students should be able to sight‑read repertoire that is less advanced than what they are currently studying and play it the first time with minimal mistakes, a steady beat, and most musical details.
- Rhythm — Students should be able to play their pieces with a steady beat throughout and feel confident with more complex rhythms such as dotted rhythms and triplets.
- Tempo — Students should feel comfortable performing pieces at or near the indicated tempo.
- Scales & Arpeggios — Students should be familiar with the scales on their instrument up to at least four sharps or flats.
- Markings — Students should be familiar with all basic tempo, articulation, phrasing, and character markings in a score.
- Phrasing & Dynamics — Students should be able to make clear phrasing and dynamic distinctions.
