Since 1944, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BKCM) has occupied one of Park Slope’s most beautiful historic mansions, a five-story Victorian brownstone at the corner of 7th Avenue and Lincoln Place. This fall, the beloved non-profit community music school is expanding to a second, 12,000-square-foot location within One Prospect Park West, an equally storied 1925 Classical Revival building on Grand Army Plaza.
During OHNY Weekend, guests are invited to tour both of BKCM’s locations and learn about their history – and the unique design challenges that PBDW Architects and Consigli Construction addressed as they outfitted the lower level of a historic residential building to be a state-of-the-art facility for music education and music therapy, from sound treatment to accessibility.
Tours are led by Miranda Knutson, BKCM’s Senior Events and Community Partnerships Manager, and each will include a guest speaker to explore a distinct aspect of the Conservatory’s citywide work.
Tour Schedule
The 2 PM tour will focus on history and design, with special insights about our architectural needs.
The 3:30 PM tour invites guests to hear from staff at the new BKCM Music Therapy Institute, which will be housed in the One Prospect Park West space.
The 5 PM tour will explore these buildings’ pivotal role in BKCM’s citywide music education and music therapy programs, which operate in 90 schools and community-based organizations across the five boroughs.
