Our Leadership
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This year’s Annual Report spotlights the deep, enduring musical relationships that the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music makes possible and sustains over time.
With a 127-year history of providing New Yorkers with musical opportunities and experiences, BKCM’s roots run deep. Today, our organization is stronger than ever because we prioritize and invest in lasting connections that blossom and strengthen over time: Relationships between students and teachers, which endure as students transition from childhood into adolescence and young adulthood. Between BKCM and our highly skilled faculty members, who stay with us for years, and sometimes decades, even as their own performance careers flourish. Between music therapists and clients, who come to feel like family as they navigate growth and discovery, challenges and breakthroughs.
Onsite, our building is a hub for creativity, collaboration and connection. Families and neighbors gather in our community garden, which is open to the public seven days a week. During off-peak hours, musicians from 128 zip codes converge on our studios, which we rent at deeply discounted rates to support emerging artists.
Offsite, our presence in 80-plus schools, senior centers and other settings across the five boroughs is rooted in authentic, lasting partnerships. At PS 24 in Flushing, Queens, our Music Partners teaching artists have enriched the lives of more than a generation of students over the course of 27 years. The incredible success of the BKCM Community Music Center in Cypress Hills/East New York, Brooklyn, was possible because our relationship with Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation began 20 years before we launched the CMC, now in its second year.
Our commitment to forging relationships with and among members of New York City’s rich tapestry of communities has propelled our evolution into a major presenting institution. The 200-plus free or low-cost festivals, concerts, cultural celebrations and other events we host each year draw nearly 15,000 New Yorkers—enriching, inspiring and connecting communities citywide while supplying musicians with a steady stream of paid gigs.
BKCM envisions a world where every New Yorker has access to lifelong music instruction, music therapy and hands-on musical experiences—regardless of their financial circumstances, skill, ability or age. With your partnership, we’re working to make this a reality.
Chad Cooper
Executive Director
LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
As the stories highlighted in our 2023 Annual Report illustrate, BKCM is not your average music school. In fact, there’s nothing average about this remarkable institution—from our enduring partnerships with community organizations across the five boroughs to our focus on nurturing lifelong musical relationships.
These relationships don’t happen by accident. They’re the fruits of BKCM’s intentional decisions: To invest in attracting and retaining faculty members of the highest caliber. To support our students and clients as their skills, challenges and financial circumstances evolve. To delight, inspire and connect more New Yorkers each year, with an ever-expanding roster of events.
My own relationship with BKCM began in 2019, when I enrolled my four-year-old son in the Suzuki Program. Each time I set foot in the building or attended an offsite (or online) event, I’d discover another facet of BKCM’s work.
I learned that the students and clients who converge on our Park Slope home represent just a fraction of BKCM’s community—and that nearly three-quarters of those we serve live at or below the poverty line. I learned that BKCM operates dozens of music education programs in neighborhoods citywide, including the popular band program at my son’s elementary school. I discovered that our skilled music therapists work with clients in communities across New York, often at no cost to clients.
Fast forward to 2024. Since this is, after all, a letter from the Board Chair, it’s clear that my own connection to BKCM has grown. But there’s even more to that story. My son and I are both now CMS students (guitar for me, drums for him). He’s nine now, and still working with his first Suzuki piano teacher, Jeong-Hwa Park—who’s ushered him through the joys and challenges of learning an instrument for half his life.
BKCM’s mission is ambitious: transforming lives and building community through the expressive, educational and therapeutic powers of music. Transformation and community-building require serious, sustained investment and enormous reservoirs of energy, talent and support. BKCM has all of these ingredients, thanks to our excellent staff, faculty, leadership, Board of Trustees and Advisory Council—and the ongoing generosity of our supporters. I’m so proud of our accomplishments and can’t wait to see how BKCM, and the relationships that distinguish us, blossom in 2024.

Community Music School
In 2023, our Community Music School (CMS) continued to serve as a musical home for students of all ages, abilities and skill levels. Each day of the week, year-round, our Park Slope home was filled with the sounds of private lessons, group classes, ensembles and workshops for music-makers ranging from six months to 95 years old. In 2023, 947 New Yorkers from 85 zip codes took part in CMS’s classes and ensembles. Throughout this impressive year of growth, our students and faculty were guided by the Community Music School’s core values: joy, community, perseverance, quality and creativity.
“As a parent of two BKCM students, watching my own students grow here has been thrilling for me. One thing that distinguishes our community is how we focus equally on learning an instrument, building the confidence to perform and forging lasting connections with amazing teachers who inspire artistry.”
– BRIAN DRYE, COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL DIRECTOR
Teo & Yoko – 5 Years of Piano
“When pieces were difficult, I sometimes got frustrated. But Yoko calmly led me through it, and I learned how to be patient with my work. It was a good experience, because if I had kept rushing it, then I wouldn’t get the best quality.”
– Teo Yoo, Community Music School piano student
Lim & Zahrah – 8 Years of Bass & Piano
“She tells me that she wants to go to college for music and choose a music career. I feel responsible in a way, because it’s not an easy path—but that’s also an incredible and beautiful thing. I’m happy to have someone who’s following that.
– Jeong Lim Yang, bassist, composer and Community Music School Faculty Member
Suzuki Program
Since 2006, BKCM has offered training in the Suzuki method: a nurturing pedagogy based on the concept that all children have the ability to master the language of music. Suzuki parents are uniquely involved in their children’s musical growth, learning alongside them. In 2023, we welcomed 33 new families, engaging a total of 268 students in the study of violin, cello, bass, guitar, flute and piano as well as our Suzuki Early Childhood Education program. As Suzuki students advance, they supplement individual and group lessons with workshops, ensembles and performance opportunities—in 2023, winners of the Suzuki Concerto Competition joined the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra onstage at the Brooklyn Museum, and BKCM’s Chamber Groups performed in the Interlochen Community Partners Concert at Merkin Hall.
“Suzuki said, ‘Beautiful tone, beautiful heart.’ That part of his philosophy really speaks to me: Through this rigorous work, children gain increased sensitivity and an ability to take on challenges, break things down, communicate, work through frustration and be patient. All these skills apply to other kinds of learning—helping to make you a successful person but also a wonderful human being.”
– NORA FRIEDMAN, SUZUKI PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Michele & Shiloh – 12 Years of Suzuki Guitar
“The long-term, close-knit relationships are just the greatest. To be able to watch what Shiloh’s doing and see all my students are doing beautiful things—I’m just so grateful that I get to be a part of their lives.”
– Michele Horner, Suzuki Guitar Department Head
Isabel & Nora – 14 Years of Suzuki Violin
“Through this rigorous work, parents and kids develop a deeper understanding of each other and learn how to work with each other. It’s a huge sacrifice for parents, but done right, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
– Nora Friedman, Suzuki Program Director
Music Therapy
As a proud inclusion music school, BKCM is arguably NYC’s largest provider of music therapy, a psychotherapeutic practice in which clinically trained professionals use music as a tool to promote the developmental and social-emotional growth of clients of all abilities. In 2023, 21 credentialed BKCM music therapists worked with more than 2,100 clients at our Park Slope home and 44 community outreach sites citywide. We continued to support neurodiverse talent at events like Open Stages as well as paid gigs outside of BKCM, such as Amoako Buache’s featured performance at Council Member Mercedes Narcisse’s inauguration. BKCM Music Therapy also partnered with Extreme Kids and Crew to start a teen rock band. Naming themselves The DaFunkies, this group of talented teens played a packed house at Brooklyn’s Jalopy Theatre for their first performance in the spring.
“Our music therapists, who are all trained practitioners and experienced administrators, work together in a tight, familial way. This has allowed us to build deep, important relationships with our clients, their families and our community partners, and the strength of these relationships remains our top priority as our work expands.”
– TOBY WILLIAMS, MA, MT-BC, LCAT, AVPT, MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Isaiah, Dannyele & Rafe – 18 Years of Adaptive Lessons
“The warmth and the connectedness of the environment really helps foster the connections we have with our clients and students.”
– Dannyele Crawford, MS, MT-BC, LCAT-LP, Music Therapy Outreach Program Coordinator & Music Therapist
Melissa & Helen – 10 Years of Music Therapy
“Sometimes music is a fun way to connect, and other times it’s a container for some of our strongest feelings, helping us celebrate and mourn everything about being human. No matter how big those feelings are, the music holds them.”
– Melissa Harris, MA, MT-BC, LCAT, Music Therapist
Music Partners
Music Partners served 3,482 students across New York City in 2023 by placing skilled teaching artists in 34 public schools, senior centers, childcare centers and other community settings. Programs are tailored to suit each partner site’s needs, with offerings including bucket drumming, recorder, early childhood music and movement, band, strings, guitar, ukulele, chorus, songwriting and film scoring. Music Partners also presented concerts and lecture series at partner locations throughout the year, including a Winter Concert at P.S. 89 and a performance at M.S. 50 during Black History Month as part of a Civil Rights Songs curriculum taught by Music Partners faculty member Tahira Clayton.
“Our work relies on the strength of our relationships and the quality of our faculty—on our ability to listen and respond to each individual site’s needs and goals. As our team grows, our capacity to effectively do this deeply collaborative work across the city does, too.”
– DOROTHY SAVITCH, MUSIC PARTNERS PROGRAM DIRECTOR
David & Janice
8 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP AT VISTA ACADEMY
As Assistant Principal at Vista Academy in East New York, Janice McLean has worked with BKCM’s Music Partners Program for nearly a decade. Through her collaboration with faculty like David Bertrand, high-quality music education has become a regular part of life for Vista’s middle school scholars. “This is not a business partnership,” Janice says. “This is a partnership based on love of children and love of music. That makes it easy.”
The music education that David aims to impart at Vista transcends technical mastery. “So many of Vista’s alumni will go on to be supporters of the arts,” he says. “They’ll understand what commitment feels like, and they’ll apply that to being masters of their own destiny.”
“If you haven’t brought BKCM into your school community, you should definitely consider it—and you should also understand that they will become a part of your family.”
– Janice McLean, Assistant Principal, Vista Academy
The Community Music Center
in Cypress Hills/East New York
In November 2023, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of the BKCM Community Music Center (CMC): a promising new model for offering young people seamless, year-round music education in convenient, accessible locations. The CMC, an outgrowth of our two-decade partnership with the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, operates inside a new mixed-use building that includes a community center. Enrollment surged so quickly that shortly after opening, we expanded beyond elementary and middle schoolers, adding early childhood programs. In 2023, 222 children, teens and caregivers took part in our classes. Through the CMC, we provide students with up to six hours of music education each week, including private lessons and a Saturday Band Academy.
“Bob Marley says, ‘One good thing about music is when it hits, you feel no pain.’ Music makes you able to make new friends and share the love that is in with your heart with other people. As a teacher, I observe what it does for my daughter—it helps her understand others and relate.”
– FIRM SOLOMON ZION SELASSIE, PARENT OF MERCY, COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER STUDENT
Jaylee & Deric
A CONTINUUM OF MUSIC EDUCATION IN CYPRESS HILLS/EAST NEW YORK
When Deric Dickens first walked into her class, Jaylee Cano initially thought he was “just one of those music subs.” But she quickly realized that he’d learned a thing or two about percussion in his years of touring around the world—and that he was at the Community Music Center to stay.
“I like the fact that we’re being taught and trained by actual professionals in music,” Jaylee says. She had never played in front of a big crowd before enrolling at the CMC, but that didn’t last long. After a few months of practice, she performed alongside Deric as a duo, hitting her sixteenth notes and flams with confidence. The crowd went wild.
“One of the great things about me being a musician and a teacher is that I’m a better musician when I’m teaching and a better teacher when I’m playing.”
– Deric Dickens, percussionist, composer and Community Music Center/Music Partners Faculty Member
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
BKCM takes a holistic, all-stakeholders approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Students, parents, faculty, staff, partner organizations and members of the broader BKCM community are all involved in this work, which is led by our Director of DEI Uton Onyejekwe. Continuing with our theme of lasting relationships, Uton has been part of the BKCM community since 2017. While his tenure as Director of DEI began in 2022, when we created the role, he has taught voice, chorus and songwriting through Music Partners for seven years (and counting).
In 2023, we launched our second biannual DEI survey, which collects information on the demographics and sentiments of our community members. These surveys are an important tool, as they allow us to assess the impact of our DEI work, chart our progress and identify areas where we can improve moving forward.
Community
We enriched the diversity of our community with initiatives like our Jazz Leaders Fellowship, which provides financial support and other resources to Black women and non-binary jazz musicians. We curated and produced events by and for New Yorkers from all backgrounds—including a sold-out Lunar New Year celebration and an Open Stages event featuring artists representing myriad cultures, ethnicities, genres and styles. We also collaborated with staff at Brooklyn’s M.S. 50 to develop a curriculum on protest and freedom songs, which was integrated into Social Studies classes.
Repertoire
We examined the repertoire for all of our classes, ensembles and music therapy sessions—and are continually expanding it to better reflect the full diversity of our New York City community. We also began developing an online database of works by diverse composers, with help from BKCM faculty member Arthur Villar. Not only will this database be an important resource for BKCM faculty, but we envision amplifying its impact by extending access to other cultural and educational organizations.
Hiring & Training
We conducted three staff-wide DEI training sessions during the 2022-23 school year. Jazz Leaders Fellow Jasmine Wilson joined Uton, our DEI Director, in leading a session on cultural humility. Music Therapy Program Director Toby Williams led a training on neurodiversity. And Uton led a session on recognizing and mitigating bias. In addition to enriching the work of our current staff and faculty, we’re continuing to scrutinize and refine our hiring and recruitment practices to broaden and diversify our talent pool.
Supporting Emerging & Professional Musicians
The Conservatory doesn’t just shape the next generation of musicians and music lovers—it’s also a hub for professional working musicians in New York, providing reliable jobs, affordable spaces to rehearse and nearly 600 paid gig opportunities each year.
Affordable Studio Rentals
Our affordable studio rental program, the Studio Collective, helps solve a major challenge for New York City musicians: the lack of low-cost, accessible and acoustically suitable spaces to practice and collaborate. BKCM now invites musicians to book our 17 light-filled studios whenever they’re not occupied by lessons, classes or music therapy sessions. More than 1,600 artists have joined the Studio Collective, which offers early access to our online booking platform and other community-building initiatives. We rented our practice studios for more than 5,530 hours in 2023, and with support from the New York State Council on the Arts and the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, we provided 3,650 of those hours at no cost to musicians.
Reliable Employment for Creatives
BKCM is a major employer of professional artists, with more than 70% of our $7.5 million budget going towards payroll. The vast majority of our 200+ full- and part-time employees—including music therapists, teaching artists, program directors and administrative support staff—are world-class musicians fully immersed in the city’s vibrant arts and culture scene. On any given night, you can find our faculty performing in concert halls, Broadway orchestra pits, jazz festivals and nightclubs. Employment with BKCM provides a steady source of recurring income that makes it possible for musicians to live and work in New York City.
Paid Gig Opportunities
Each year we host more than 200 events, including concerts, cultural celebrations, family-oriented festivals and workshops. While many of these events showcase the talents of BKCM students and music therapy clients, most of them also provide paid gig opportunities to professional musicians at various stages of their careers. In 2023 we offered nearly 600 paid gigs to musicians who collectively embody Brooklyn’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. These gigs provide artists with a much-needed source of supplementary income, while supporting BKCM’s evolution into a major presenting institution and nexus for culture and creativity.
Financial Aid & Resources
Financial Aid for Students
BKCM envisions a world where every New Yorker has access to excellent music instruction, music therapy and hands-on musical experiences—regardless of their financial circumstances. The vast majority of our more than 5,600 offsite students and clients receive our services for free or at heavily subsidized rates, due to a combination of government grants and subsidies, private donations, contributions from our partner organizations and surpluses generated by BKCM’s onsite work.
We are also working to make our vision a reality by expanding our financial aid pool and helping families access aid to which they are entitled, to attract and retain onsite students and clients from a broad range of backgrounds and income levels. BKCM distributed almost $650,000 in direct and indirect financial assistance during the 2022-23 school year, creating the opportunity for 323 students and clients to enroll in private lessons, group classes, ensembles, music therapy and summer camps.
Events at BKCM
In 2023, BKCM hosted 285 free or low-cost events—entertaining, inspiring and connecting nearly 15,000 participants across the city. Our events reflect the rich and diverse tapestry of Brooklyn’s community, contributing to our city’s flourishing cultural scene.
