Our Leadership
A LETTER FROM BKCM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHAD COOPER
2025 was a momentous year in my tenure at BKCM – and in this organization’s 129-year history. For years, we have been exploring ways to address our ever-growing space needs. And now, for the first time in 82 years, BKCM is about to have much more room.
This fall, as you may know, we will open BKCM Prospect Park West: a new 12,000-square-foot facility on Grand Army Plaza, just four blocks from our home at 58 Seventh Ave. As you’ll see in this report, construction is already underway. I’m so excited for the possibilities that 13 new studios, a second performance hall, and a dedicated community space will create for students, music therapy clients and families – and for the launch of our new Music Therapy Institute, seeded by a landmark gift from Alexis and Billy Joel’s The Joel Foundation.
Growth is thrilling, but it comes with questions and challenges. The things that make BKCM feel like BKCM — the warmth, accessibility and sense that this place belongs to all of us — are no accident. They are the product of years of intentional work by people who understand that a Community Music School is only as good as its relationship with its community. As we grow, we are determined to do so with intention and purpose so we can bring what’s already special about BKCM to thousands more New Yorkers.
What gives me confidence is what I see every day: students, clients and families who make BKCM their second home, music therapists and teaching artists who bring music into more than 90 schools and organizations citywide, and thousands of musicians who count on us for affordable rehearsal space. That is what we are growing — not just the square footage, but the warmth and sense of belonging that is at the heart of what we do.
I hope the stories and statistics in our 2025 Annual Report will provide a snapshot of the work this organization is doing across the five boroughs today – the ways we plan to grow that work to ensure the long-term success and culture of this amazing organization.
With gratitude,
Chad Cooper

A LETTER FROM BKCM BOARD CHAIR FREDERICK TANG
I first came to BKCM seven years ago in the way many Brooklynites do: as a neighborhood institution where I attended events. My relationship to it became more personal as a parent when my young kids began taking music lessons there, and more engaged still when I joined the Board.
Over the past five years on the Board, I’ve come to see the Conservatory as something more expansive than a local music school: a citywide ecosystem that connects more than 7,000 New Yorkers with music education and music therapy, and an institution that provides meaningful pathways to sustaining a professional life in music. I’ve also come to understand the scale of BKCM’s ambitions to reach and serve even more students and working artists.
Much of the Board’s work in recent years has been focused on how to support that growth in a way that’s thoughtful and sustaining. In 2025, those efforts began to take physical form with the announcement and ground-breaking of our campus expansion project at BKCM Prospect Park West, which is slated to open this Fall. As you’ll see in this report, what started as an abstract idea years ago has now become something very real and tangible.
As a former Suzuki piano and violin student (and an adult BKCM piano student) myself, I fell in love with BKCM for the way it encourages joy in music and genuine community. As we look toward this organization’s long-term future, I know BKCM will hold fast to the community values that make this organization what it is.
The pages that follow offer a snapshot of the things we’ve accomplished over the last year – the inspirational work our teaching artists, music therapists, staff and students do across all of our locations across the city every day. It is a picture of an organization in motion, on the brink of transformative growth.

A Landmark Announcement
In 2025, BKCM announced the expansion of our Park Slope Campus to a new 12,000-square-foot location on Grand Army Plaza. BKCM Prospect Park West will be home to a national Music Therapy Institute, 13 music studios, a new performance hall and a spacious community room. We are planning to open our doors in Fall 2026 – and the work is already underway!
13 NEW STUDIOS
MORE SPACE TO LEARN & CREATE
The photos in this section offer a look at how each part of the space looked before construction began, how it looks today, and a rendering that represents how the final space will look after construction is done. In the first section, you’ll see the progress so far on one of the space’s 13 new acoustically treated, ADA-accessible studios for music therapy sessions, classes, lessons and rehearsals.
PERFORMANCE HALL
MORE SPACE TO PERFORM
The heart of the new BKCM Prospect Park West space will be a 1,450-square-foot Performance Hall. This space will provide a beautiful setting for student recitals and our ever-growing calendar of concerts and cultural events, serve as a flexible rehearsal space for large group classes and ensembles and greatly reduce our reliance on external rentals.
As of early April 2026, the acoustically treated subfloor in the Performance Hall has been installed, and we can start to see the shape of a space that will hold many wonderful nights of music in the years to come.
COMMUNITY SPACE
MORE SPACE TO CONNECT
For the first time, BKCM will have dedicated community space where students, music therapy clients and families can relax in between lessons or sessions and enjoy each other’s company.
Construction for the community space is underway on the north side of BKCM Prospect Park West, which faces Grand Army Plaza and will also house much-needed additional office space for BKCM staff.
“The energy that makes BKCM what it is – it’s not in any one building. It’s in the people who are here co-creating this space.
Growing is good, especially with thoughtful people who are focused on retaining what’s special about this place.”
-Fatima Jihada, BKCM Head Registrar and 25-year employee

A New Institute for Music Therapy
BKCM is already NYC’s largest provider of music therapy, reaching 3,500 people of all ages and abilities. In 2026, with generous support from Alexis and Billy Joel’s The Joel Foundation, we are launching a new Music Therapy Institute, guided by the mission to shape the field on a national level through clinical practice, workforce training, research and advocacy.
CLINICAL PRACTICE
Today, BKCM’s credentialed music therapists and licensed creative arts therapists partner with 54 sites across New York City, working with children and adults of all ages and abilities. Our Community Music Therapy program is rooted in culturally responsive, neurodiversity-affirming, client-centered music therapy practice. The Music Therapy Institute’s universal design includes sensory-friendly studios and community spaces accessible for all, regardless of physical, cognitive, or sensory abilities.

WORKFORCE TRAINING
BKCM partners with AMTA-approved music therapy bachelor’s and master’s degree programs across the country to provide clinical internship and fieldwork/practicum opportunities. The Music Therapy Institute will enable us to grow our capacity to become a core training facility in this fast-growing field, and expand our Continuing Education and workshop offerings for practicing music therapists and other licensed creative arts therapists.

RESEARCH
With music therapists at 54 different sites across New York City – and clients who are diverse in age, ability and socioeconomic background – BKCM’s music therapy program is uniquely well-positioned to conduct fieldwork-based research on the practice, clinical outcomes, and systemic impact of creative arts therapies. The Institute will conduct research, publish in the field, and convene events for music therapists across the U.S.

ADVOCACY
At this exciting moment for music therapy, BKCM plans to continue its work as an advocate for recognition and support in New York State and beyond. Recently, Music Therapy Program Director Toby Williams traveled to Albany to speak on an Arts Day 2026 panel and co-authored an op-ed with Alexis Joel advocating for the governor to pass a bill that would bring Licensed Creative Arts Therapists into the same insurance framework as other forms of psychotherapy.
“The new Music Therapy Institute will be a national model for how the arts can support human development, connection and mental health.”
-Billy & Alexis Joel, Co-Founders, The Joel Foundation

50+ HATS LEFT BEHIND
In 2025, our lost and found remained overflowing thanks to contributions by BKCM staff, faculty and families. In 2026, we’ll try to find their owners!
There’s no money in the world that can pay for the experience of seeing a kid develop their ear, understand music, craft different sounds and have fun at the same time, and see how their brain can develop even further. That’s just priceless.”

Music Partners in 2025

4,240 STUDENTS
Across the five boroughs, thousands of students received weekly, continuous music education through BKCM’s Music Partners program in 2025.

36 PARTNER SITES
Music Partners works with a wide range of public and private schools, afterschool programs and youth and senior centers, tailoring each program to our partner organization’s needs and goals.

138 CMC STUDENTS
At BKCM’s Community Music Center at Chestnut Commons, in Cypress Hills-East New York, students from age 1-17 participated in music classes, private lessons, and ensembles this year.

64% OF MUSIC PARTNERS SITES
More than half of our partner schools and organizations would not otherwise have a full-time music teacher, and rely on Music Partners teaching artists to provide weekly music education to students.

200+ STUDENT PERFORMERS
Music students from schools across the city came to BKCM during our Open Stages Festival in May to perform for families, community members and festival-goers.

300+ UKULELES
Sources say that hundreds of ukuleles were used by Music Partners students and teaching artists in 2025 – not to mention hundreds of other instruments, from guitars and djembes to woodwinds and brass.
“Having these resources in a low-income community, where you can walk to access them – there’s not a price you can put on that. It brings a sense of real community. You can say, we belong to something.”
-Anclin S., Parent of Two Students at the BKCM Community Music Center in Cypress Hills-East New York and a Music Partners school
OUR PROGRAMS
The BKCM Studio Collective in 2025

3,150 MUSICIANS & ARTISTS
Formally established just four years ago, BKCM’s affordable rehearsal space program, the Studio Collective, surged past 3,000 members in FY25. Now, it has more than 4,000 members.

1,196 NEW MEMBERS
In FY25, more than a thousand people joined the Studio Collective and booked rehearsal time in BKCM’s 17 Steinway-equipped studios for the first time.

$10-15 PER HOUR
In a city where affordable, suitable rehearsal space is rare, BKCM offers deeply discounted rental rates to keep our studios accessible to working artists.

8,482 REHEARSAL HOURS
Musicians rehearsed in BKCM’s studios for a record number of hours in 2025. 3,735 of those hours were booked for free during New York Music Month or by BKCM staff and faculty.

35% REVENUE INCREASE
In FY25, the Studio Collective also continued to be a key, fast-growing source of revenue for BKCM, allowing us to make use of our spaces when they are not being used for classes and lessons.

477 ZIP CODES
Studio Collective members – including touring musicians and other visiting performers – represent a geographic spread even larger than New York City.
“It’s hard to be a performer, because it comes with a lot of costs and not always a lot of income in return. Having BKCM is very helpful, especially in New York. Coming here and knowing that I can do my thing and not be judged or bother anybody is a great feeling. With the price, it’s fantastic.”
-Haleyann H., Studio Collective Member
More Than Music
Music is BKCM’s heart. But through that music and our mission, this organization touches so many other aspects of New Yorkers’ lives. In 2025, BKCM was…
A Nexus of Opportunity for Creative Professionals
In a city where creatives consistently rank cost of living as their greatest challenge, BKCM is a source of reliable employment, affordable rehearsal space, and gig opportunities. In FY25, more than 200 New York musicians and creatives relied on BKCM for full or part-time employment, and nearly 2,000 more rehearsed in our studios for as little as $10 an hour.

A Hub for Community and Cultural Events
From Lunar New Year to Holi, from free outdoor festivals to sold-out Chorale concerts, BKCM’s specialty is bringing people together around music. In FY25, we launched several new events, including a Studio Collective Song Share series where musicians can perform and connect and a popular Bluegrass Jam series. We also welcomed record numbers to our summer jazz series, Midsummer Nights, when hundreds of people flocked to BKCM’s stoop each week.

A Place Where Everyone Feels Welcome
In 2025, BKCM doubled down our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all our programs and events. During New York Music Month in June, we made our studios free to all musicians and convened artists, culture writers, music educators, and industry executives of color for a panel on Resonance and Resilience: The Power of Music in Uncertain Times. As we look toward our expansion next year, our focus is on making our programs accessible to more New Yorkers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
