Saturday, June 13 • 3pm doors, 4pm show • Bric Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Lena Horne Bandshell

BRIC partners with The Center for Fiction and The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music for an eclectic afternoon of family fun, culture, and music. At 4 pm, Ochion Jewell will lead a band of fellow BKCM faculty members Hans Luchs (guitar), Fabio Rojas (drums), and Felipe Arce (bass) to provide live musical accompaniment for a bilingual live reading of Katie Yamasaki‘s picture book, Mural Island. 

Later in the evening, multigenerational crowd-pleaser DJ Marc Bars spins an adventurous mix of pop, hip-hop, and classic party anthems. Godfathers of the Brooklyn Afrobeat scene, Antibalas will get the whole family dancing, closing out the evening with their infectious horn-driven jams.

Ochion Jewell (saxophone) is a jazz saxophonist and composer from Appalachian Kentucky. After studying jazz, free improvisation and composition at the University of Louisville and the California Institute of the Arts, he moved to New York City, where he has collaborated with world-renowned visual artist Marc Lafia, filmmaker/activist Mariam Ghani, Grammy-winning musicians Charlie Haden, Lionel Loueke, and Joe LaBarbera, composer/drummer Qasim Naqvi, the Haitian ensemble Bohio Music, and a majority of the Brooklyn jazz and free improvisation community. He’s held concerts of original music in the Guggenheim Museum, PS1 MOMA, the Rubin Museum of Art, the Met Breuer, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Felipe Arce (bass) is an Argentinian-born, New York-based bass player, composer, arranger, bandleader, and educator. Before establishing himself in the United States, Arce had already built a remarkable career across Latin America. He performed regularly at some of the region’s most prestigious venues. Since relocating to Brooklyn, New York, in 2023, Arce has continued to expand his artistry, firmly establishing himself in the city’s highly competitive music scene. His latest album, EXPANSION, was released was released under the legendary Fresh Sound record label.

Fabio Rojas (drums) is a Venezuelan-American drummer, film composer, educator and actor based in New York City. Rojas has performed with artists such as Greg Osby, Geri Allen, Grace VanderWaal, Pepe de Lucia, Terri Lyne Carrington, John Cowherd, Mike Rodriguez, Sean Jones, Pablo Menares, Kevin Harris, Lonnie Plaxico, David Bixler, Dan Loomis and in venues such as Lincoln Center, SXSW, Agganis Arena, TEDx, Boston Symphony Hall, and the Daegu Jazz Festival. In September 2024, Rojas released his debut album as a leader, Perseverance, featuring jazz legends Greg Osby, Gustavo D’amico, Kevin Harris, and Osmar Okuma.

Hans Luchs is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader living in New York City. He originally got his start playing around his native Chicago, performing at The Auditorium Theatre, The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Green Mill, Buddy Guy’s Legends, Andy’s Jazz Club, and The Jazz Showcase to name a few. Since moving to New York, Hans has played at Mezzrow, Smalls, Ornithology, Cafe Ornithology, The Django, Minton’s Playhouse, Midnight Blue, The Bowery Electric, The Bitter End, and many other venues, and toured internationally in Sweden, England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Mexico, Canada, and Turkey.
